I have observed and I have heard of several things that are going on in our parking lot that are putting kids in danger and creating inconvenience for others. Everything we do here, we do it with the safety and well-being of your children in mind. We need for everyone to follow along and have the same goal in mind.
1. PLEASE DRIVE VERY SLOWLY IN OUR PARKING LOT. No matter how much of a hurry you are in, it is not so important that you cannot take it slowly, carefully and courteously. You never know where a child or a parent may emerge from and if you hit someone and injure them, you will need to live with the consequences. The same is true as you exit our parking lot. Kids from other schools are walking to and from school on the sidewalk and you need to watch out for them as well. They are counting on you to watch out for them. Many are little kids walking by themselves.
2. STAY OFF YOUR CELL PHONE! Every day as I stand outside during the morning and afternoon, I observe parents on their cell phones. No phone call is worth the consequences of distracted driving. Give your kids and other kids your undivided attention as you travel around the parking lot. Please stay off your phone.
3. During morning arrival and afternoon dismissal, the exit is RIGHT TURN ONLY. Note, this does not mean right turn only when someone is standing there to direct you. It is right turn only until 8:30AM and until 3:30PM, every day, not just at the time someone is there to direct you. Just like we tell the kids, right is right all the time, not just when someone is looking at you.
4. Please do not drop your kids off anywhere other than the drop-off zone and do not pick them up anywhere other than the pickup zone. If you wish to park your car instead of getting in the car line, you must then walk over all the way to the other side of the driveway and retrieve your child. Please do not signal to or call your child to cross by his/her self. I saw this happen several times this week and it is DANGEROUS! If you are walking with your children, hold their hand and keep them with you. Please do not lose track of them while socializing and talking with others.
If a child (or parent) were to be injured in our parking lot, I would personally be devastated but I also would know that it is not due to a lack of procedure or instruction on the part of the school. We have procedures and we have given lots of instruction. We just need for everyone to follow the procedures. Thank you to those that are doing a great job.
